Navigating Insecurity in Nigeria’s Educational Landscape: A Critical Analysis-Humphrey Ukhurebor and Obinna Nwoko

ABSTRACT: The persistent escalation of insecurity across Nigeria has disrupted schooling at all levels, yet prevailing scholarship often frames the issue primarily through security and policy lenses, neglecting the internal dynamics of educational ecosystems. This research identified a gap in understanding how insecurity reconfigures the interplay between schools, communities, and learning processes, and how educational institutions can respond beyond state-centric interventions. This study critically analyzes how insecurity is navigated within Nigeria’s educational landscape by reimagining the relationship between educational ecosystems and prevailing violence and foregrounding locally grounded responses. The paper examined insecurity's impact on Nigeria’s educational infrastructure, including school closures, teacher displacement, student trauma, and the erosion of trust in formal schooling. It analyzed how insecurity intersects with existing structural weaknesses to produce a fragmented educational environment that undermines access, equity, and quality. Central to the discussion is reimagining educational ecosystems as adaptive, community-embedded networks capable of sustaining learning under duress. The researchers advocated community-led initiatives as a viable pathway to mitigate risk, restore social capital, and preserve pedagogical continuity when state mechanisms are compromised. Using an analytical method, the study synthesized philosophical perspectives on education, security, and resilience to decipher the complex interplay between insecurity and schooling in Nigeria. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended decentralizing educational resilience through community-owned safety frameworks, integrating psychosocial support into school practice, and fostering collaborative governance among schools, local actors, and civil society to sustain learning amid insecurity.
